Home Amongst the Green

It was my recent pleasure to talk with Andrew and Jessie Schuhart-McRae from Home Amongst the Green, and find out how and why they began their allergy-friendly cooking business, which was borne out of wanting to help people grow their own food in their own home.

Andrew and Jessie's original inspiration came from watching 'River Cottage', a UK series created by writer and broadcaster, Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall and based upon his early smallholdings experiences . They visited 'River Cottage' in the UK and came home wanting to do something similar in Australia, and became really passionate about creating a similar lifestyle. And so began 'Home Amongst the Green'.

In the above video, Andrew and Jessie share a little about their story and their passion for providing high quality, home-grown and baked goods and also about how they want to share their knowledge and show people how easy it is to grow and access good food.

Something that isn't shared on the video, is Jessie's own journey when she was diagnosed with Hashimoto's disease, which influenced her decision to pursue a green and allergy-friendly lifestyle. You can read more about Andrew and Jessie's full story here, on their website.

Home Amongst the Green provide amongst other things, dairy, gluten, egg, nut and soy free products and their baked goods can be tasted at the local markets and local cafes around North Brisbane. You can find Andrew and Jessie selling their wares at the Castledeine Markets on a Saturday and Redcliffe Markets on a Sunday, on alternate weeks.

With an education in permaculture and holistic agriculture, and Andrew's experience as a chef, Andrew and Jessie are also keen to educate people on how to grow their own food and provide services to help people create their own green lifestyle.  Currently, they're busy creating baked goods based on what they call 'Crowd Favourites' and making them allergy-friendly, such as Banana bread, carrot cake, donuts, cookies and more. And I must tell that my personal favourites are their Herb and Quinoa Savoury muffins and my all-time favourite...Blueberry Streussel Cake...it is to die for!

Thanks to Andrew and Jessie for allowing me to visit their home and home-kitchen (their goods are actually cooked in their commercial kitchen) and to share a beautiful, allergy-friendly lunch in great company with great conversation.  Isn't that what's it all about? Sharing good food with good friends and family, and good conversation?
